Volunteer
The Kansas Historical Society's large volunteer force is critical to its operations. Numerous diverse volunteer opportunities are available. Your service can make a world of difference to the future of Kansas.
The Historical Society is headquartered in Topeka where many of the volunteer opportunities are located. Volunteers also provide support at the state historic sites, Kansas State Capitol, and through the Kansas Historical Foundation, the private 501(c)(3) organization.

Archeology volunteer
Assists with processing archeology and ethnographic collections; provides data entry support; or scans slides and images.
Archives volunteer
Processes manuscripts, photographs, and other archival materials or assists patrons in the reference library. You can watch an interview with one of our genealogy volunteers in the final segment of this episode of Sunflower Journeys.
Capitol volunteer
Conducts guided tours and staffs the information desk at the Kansas State Capitol.
Discovery Place volunteer
Welcomes visitors and monitors activities in the hands-on gallery, Discovery Place.
Museum docent
Conducts guided tours of the the Kansas Museum of History galleries.
Museum Store volunteer
Assists with pricing, stocking, and sales.
Special projects volunteer
Assists various divisions with special projects including research, clerical work, cataloging, planning, mailings, and special events.
Student volunteer
Students ages 13-16 are encouraged to call about volunteer opportunities at the Historical Society. During the summer months, student volunteers assist with various programs.
Training and support
The Kansas Historical Society provides training for every volunteer service area. It also offers monthly continuing education programs, social programs, and opportunities to work directly with the professional staff. Work schedules vary according to the service area. We will work to accommodate your schedule.
