The Cover

Copy of a Hermann Stieffel watercolor titled, "Attack on Genl. Marcy's Train Escorted by Co. K, 5th U. S. Inf: Br. Maj. D. H. Brotherton, Commanding, Near Pawnee Fort, Ks. Sept. 23, 1867." The artist was one of the troopers engaged in the skirmish. Yale University, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Kansas Historical Society owns Stieffel originals under this title. They vary only slightly in composition.

The place of the Cheyenne attack has not been pinpointed. One description says it was west of an Arkansas river crossing to the Cimarron, and another that it was "near Fort Dodge."

Looking closely you will see some of those southwest Kansas "mountains" which appear even to this day on TV's "Gunsmoke."
