Indian Homes in Kansas Traveling Trunk

First grade students explore housing styles of Plains Indians through the use of reproductions of American Indian artifacts, photographs and drawings, maps, scale models of three historical housing styles, and books. Lessons reinforce the use of natural resources, adaptation to the environment, and change over time.
Seventh grade students conduct primary source research about the buffalo's place in the daily life of the Plains Indians using objects and ethnographies. They can compare their findings by examining diary entries made by a buffalo hunter. Students then use what they learned to predict the affect the disappearance of the buffalo would have on both groups.
