Topeka Fiesta Mexicana
On August 17, 1933, parishioners of Our Lady of Guadalupe and their extended families gathered for a celebration. The church itself, established in 1914 was a cornerstone of the community. In 1953, funds raised from the fiesta were used to expand and refurbish the Catholic school.
Over the years the fiesta has expanded to encompass several city blocks. The first fiesta "Queen" ceremony, the title awarded to young women and their families who raise the highest amount of money for the church and community occurred in 1939 with Marie Mendoza winning the title.
The fiesta ceased in 1968 but resumed four years later.
