Henry Roe Cloud
Education Administrator. Born 1864, Nebraska. Died 1950.
Roe Cloud, a Winnebago Indian, was born in Nebraska and was adopted by a family named Roe. He graduated from Yale in 1910, received a theology degree three years later, and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister. He helped found the Society of American Indians which worked to give educational opportunities to young Native Americans. He was also involved in the establishment of high schools for Indians, which were not common at that time.
Roe went to work for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Two years later he was made superintendent of the Haskell Institute in Lawrence, which was a high school at that time. He was the first full-blood Indian to hold such a position. He moved on to become the superintendent of an Indian agency where he served until his death. A building at Haskell University is named after him.
