Glacial Hills
The Glacial Hills can be found in the northeast corner of the state, north of the Kansas River and south of the Big Blue River. This area had once been covered with glaciers, about 600,000 years ago. As the glaciers retreated they left behind debris, and a distinct landscape. The Glacial Hills contain loess, a special kind of soil, that is found nowhere else within the state. Historic sites in the region include the Atchison County Historical Society Museum in the Santa Fe Depot, National Fred Harvey Museum, Victorian Carroll Mansion and Museum, Fort Leavenworth, and Iowa and Sac & Fox Mission State Historic Site.
